MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
What is church membership?
When an individual becomes a believer in Jesus Christ, he or she automatically becomes a member of the body of Christ.
(1 Corinthians 12: 13) Since the believer is united to Christ and the other members of the body in this way, they are qualified to become a member of a local church. Church membership then is formally identifying with God's church.
Practically, at Emmanuel, it enables people to vote on key issues concerning our church family (budgets, staff positions, etc.) and to hold elected offices (Elder, Deacon, etc.).
Why membership?
While the specific way that we frame membership at Emmanuel is not taught in the Bible, the principle of membership is. We are told in the book of Acts when people became believers in Christ they were âadded to their numberâ (Acts 2:41; 5:14). In other words when people put their trust in Jesus Christ they were immediately connected to other believers.
There was an understanding of who belonged to the community of faith and who did not. This commitment to follow the Scriptures and identify with the visible community of Jesus' followers is how we belong in membership. Membership allows us to enter into an intentional relationship of accountability and encouragement.
When people become members at Emmanuel they take ownership of our mission and strategy for doing church. At Emmanuel 'we exist to win, teach, and equip our world to passionately follow Jesus Christ' (cf. Matt. 28:19-20). Our strategy to accomplish our "winning teaching and equipping" goals are what we call "The Five G's". . .
